The other weekend we were having brunch with a couple of friends, and our conversation somehow turned to the topic of Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. Remember those movies? I actually don’t remember Deep Impact very well (because I never saw it), but how crazy was it that two virtually identical movies (give or take an Aerosmith song) were released within a couple of months of each other?
Well — as we discovered — this happens all the time. Remember The Prestige and The Illusionist? They were both released in the fall of 2006. The Truman Show and EdTV were released together, and so were Antz and A Bug’s Life. Not to mention Chasing Liberty and First Daughter! This list has more.
Anyway, if a big, multi-billion dollar industry like Hollywood sometimes doubles up on movie ideas, then surely you can forgive me — a humble food blogger — for occasionally making the same mistake. This spicy bean dip/hummus I’m sharing today is very similar to another spicy bean dip/hummus I shared less than two months ago, and regrettably, neither recipe contains a song as moving or catchy as “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” But since both dips are healthy, delicious, and a cinch to whip up, how mad can you really be?
SPICY SRIRACHA WHITE BEAN DIP (recipe from White on Rice Couple)
1 15-oz can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp sesame oil
2-3 tsp soy sauce
2 tbsp sriracha
1 clove garlic, pressed
1/2 tsp curry powder
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
a few tbsp water (if needed to smooth out texture)
Combine all ingredients in food processor and process until smooth.
This had so much flavor, and it honestly couldn’t be simpler to whip up. I like this with pita chips, but it’d be great with veggies or even spread onto a wrap or sandwich.
